40% of women will experience clinically significant hair thinning or hair loss by the time they turn 50. That is four in ten. And yet the overwhelming majority of products sold to address this problem are treating the wrong thing entirely.

If you are watching more hair collect in the shower drain than you would like, or noticing that your ponytail is thinner than it used to be, or finding yourself trying every biotin supplement and scalp serum on the market without meaningful results — the science behind why those products are not working may be both clarifying and frustrating. Let me explain.

The Hair Shaft Is Dead

This is the fundamental truth the beauty industry would rather you did not internalise. The part of your hair that you can see, touch, wash, condition, oil, and treat with serums is dead. It is a filament of compacted keratin protein — structurally impressive, cosmetically manageable, but biologically inert.

Nothing you apply to the hair strand will reverse hair loss. Not keratin treatments. Not bond-repair technology. Not the most expensive botanical hair oil on the market. These products can improve the appearance, texture, and mechanical integrity of existing hair. They cannot create new ones. They cannot slow the thinning process. Because the thinning process is not happening in the hair — it is happening in the follicle.

The follicle is a living, metabolically active structure buried 2 to 4 millimetres beneath the scalp surface. It is surrounded by blood vessels, nerve fibres, sebaceous glands, and dermal papilla cells. It undergoes its own cyclical biological programme. And it is entirely inaccessible to a rinse-off shampoo.

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

To understand what happens when hair thins, you need to understand the follicle’s relationship with time. Every hair follicle cycles continuously through three phases:

  • Anagen — Anagen — the active growth phase, lasting 2 to 6 years in a healthy follicle. This is where the follicle is fully metabolically alive, connected to its blood supply, and producing a hair shaft. The proportion of follicles in anagen at any given time directly determines hair density. In a healthy scalp, approximately 85–90% of follicles are in anagen simultaneously.
  • Catagen — Catagen — the brief transition phase, lasting 1 to 2 weeks. The follicle detaches from its dermal papilla blood supply and begins to involute. Cell division ceases.

Telogen — Telogen — the resting phase, lasting 5 to 6 weeks. The old hair shaft rests in a ‘club’ position while the next growth cycle prepares beneath it. This is the phase from which normal daily hair shedding occurs.

Hair loss occurs when follicles are prematurely pushed out of anagen — either through miniaturisation (androgenic alopecia), oxidative stress-driven damage, cortisol-mediated disruption of the growth cycle, inflammatory scalp conditions, or nutritional deficiency. The anagen-to-telogen ratio shifts. Fewer follicles are actively growing. The ones that are growing produce progressively finer shafts as the follicle shrinks.

This is a biological process that begins at the follicle level and progresses over months to years. Treating its effects with a shampoo is the equivalent of treating a plumbing problem with paint.

What Real Assessment Looks Like

One of the most reliable signs that a hair product’s claims are not backed by serious science is the absence of objective measurement. The before-and-after imagery in hair product advertising is a photography exercise — different lighting conditions, selective framing, professional styling. ‘My hair feels fuller’ and ‘I noticed less shedding’ are not clinical endpoints.

Genuine hair loss research uses standardised, reproducible, objective measurement tools. The methods that matter:

TrichoScan®

The gold standard for clinical hair density studies. TrichoScan® is a dermoscopy-based phototrichogram system. The scalp is clipped in a precisely defined area, photographed, then photographed again 48 hours later. The software calculates the ratio of growing (anagen) to resting (telogen) hairs based on growth that has occurred in the 48-hour window, counts total hair density (hairs per cm²), and tracks changes across multiple timepoints. Measurements are always taken at the same mapped scalp location, making comparisons between T0 and T140 days scientifically valid.

Colorimeter (L* Parameter)

For greying studies, a colorimeter measures the ‘lightness’ value (L* in the CIELAB colour model) of the hair at a measured scalp location. This gives a precise, numerical reduction in grey pigment loss over time — independent of self-perception or photography.

Ex Vivo Hair Follicle Culture (Philpott Methodology)

Human hair follicles, isolated from living tissue and maintained in culture medium, can be treated with active compounds and measured for hair shaft elongation over a defined period. This ex vivo model is used to compare the biological potency of actives — including comparison against reference compounds like Minoxidil — in an isolated, controlled environment. It is not a clinical trial, but it is a meaningful biological signal.

When you read a hair loss claim, ask three questions: What was the measurement tool? Was there a placebo arm? Was statistical significance reported? If any of these are missing, treat the claim with appropriate caution.

The Follicle Biology Approach: What Actually Works

The category now gaining recognition in the professional hair care world is ‘hairceuticals’ — applying the pharmaceutical-grade ingredient logic of cosmeceuticals to scalp and follicle biology. Biologically active compounds, delivered to the correct tissue depth, with mechanisms of action documented in peer-reviewed science and clinical data measured by objective tools.

Vitant was formulating at this level before the term existed. The Scalp Leave-On Treatment was built around two things: a primary active with a unique, documented mechanism of action at the follicle level, and a scalp environment ingredient that provides the biological context in which that active can work. Both backed by clinical data. Both using the measurement standards described above.

ALGAKTIV® Densidyl® — The Follicle Biology Active

Densidyl® is a liposome-delivered biotech active derived from Chlorella emersonii microalgae, developed by ALGAKTIV® (Barcelona) — a world-leading marine biotechnology ingredient supplier. Its delivery in liposomes is specifically engineered for penetration to the follicle level, not surface retention.

Its mechanism is unique in the category: NRF2 pathway activation. NRF2 (Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2-Related Factor 2) is the master regulator of cellular defence against oxidative stress — the ‘guardian of redox homeostasis’ in biology. In follicle tissue, oxidative damage is one of the primary drivers of premature catagen entry (pushing follicles out of the growth phase), follicle miniaturisation, and destruction of follicular melanocytes (the pigment cells responsible for hair colour).

By activating NRF2, Densidyl® upregulates the follicle’s endogenous antioxidant defence system from within. It reduces lipid peroxidation, decreases apoptosis (cell death), slows catagen transition, and protects the melanocytes that determine whether hair grows in with colour or grey.

The NRF2 activation has been quantified: +643.47% NRF2 activation in HaCaT keratinocyte cells after 24h incubation with 1% Densidyl® (IN VITRO, p<0.001 vs negative control). This is not a surface-level cosmetic effect. This is a transcription factor activation — a change in gene expression — at the cellular level.

All results are statistically significant vs both T0 and the placebo group (p<0.05). The density curve is still building at day 140 — it has not plateaued — suggesting continued use may yield further improvement. This is consistent with the mechanism: NRF2 activation supports long-term follicle health rather than producing a rapid cosmetic burst followed by regression.

Ex vivo comparison: In a cultured human hair follicle model (Philpott et al. methodology), 0.5% Densidyl® produced +204.6% hair length increase vs T0 after 7 days of treatment. 0.5% Minoxidil, the reference compound, produced +49.4% over the same period. This is an ex vivo model and does not constitute a direct clinical equivalence claim. But the biological signal is compelling.

Additional safety profile: no hormonal interference, safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, no rebound effect on discontinuation. This distinguishes Densidyl® from Minoxidil, which carries a well-documented rebound shedding effect on discontinuation and is contraindicated in pregnancy.

ALGAKTIV® BioSKN® — The Scalp Environment Active

Healthy hair growth requires a healthy scalp microenvironment. Follicle biology does not operate in isolation — it is embedded in a living tissue ecosystem that includes the scalp microbiome, sebaceous glands, inflammatory signalling, and barrier function.

BioSKN® (Chlorella vulgaris + Spirulina maxima extracts) targets this environment directly. Clinical outcomes include -75% scalp itching and -37% scalp sebum reduction (IN VIVO). Chronic inflammation and dysregulation of scalp sebum are associated with follicle microenvironment disruption; addressing both creates the conditions in which the follicle biology work of Densidyl® operates most effectively.

The pairing is deliberate. Densidyl® works on the follicle. BioSKN® works on the environment the follicle lives in. Both are present in the Vitant Scalp Leave-On Treatment.

Supporting Actives

  • Caffeine — Caffeine — phosphodiesterase inhibition, which prolongs the anagen phase by blocking the cAMP pathway that drives catagen entry. Direct follicle stimulation with a well-characterised mechanism of action.
  • Panthenol — Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) — strengthens the hair fibre and provides moisture retention within the shaft structure.
  • Antioxidants — Ascorbic Acid + Tocopherol — antioxidant reinforcement at the scalp surface layer, complementing the deeper antioxidant work of Densidyl® via the NRF2 pathway.

The Protocol: Why Leave-On Matters

The Vitant Scalp Leave-On Treatment is applied nightly to the dry scalp, massaged in, and left overnight. It is not rinsed off. This is not incidental to its design — it is essential to it.

The delivery system requires sustained contact time with scalp tissue to facilitate penetration to the follicle depth. A shampoo or rinse-off conditioner, regardless of how many active ingredients it contains, is in contact with the scalp for two to three minutes before being washed away. At that contact time and with that delivery vehicle, clinically meaningful amounts of active material do not reach the follicle. The liposome delivery system in Densidyl® is specifically designed to optimise penetration over extended contact — hence the leave-on format.

Minimum commitment: 3 months. Optimal commitment: 5 months, based on the clinical study timeline. The +11.4% density result was measured at day 140 (approximately 4.7 months). The curve had not plateaued. Hair growth cycles are long, and the biology of follicle repair is not an overnight process.

The Hairceuticals Moment

When cosmeceuticals emerged in skincare, they did not simply add a new segment to the market. They restructured the entire category by demonstrating that pharmaceutical-grade actives, clinical data, and objective measurement changed what was possible. Brands that built around those standards created positions that are almost impossible to displace. Brands that did not were left producing increasingly elaborate marketing for products that did not materially outperform what came before.

Haircare is approximately 3 to 5 years behind that inflection point. The category is beginning to shift — TrichoScan® data is starting to appear in brand literature. Follicle biology language is entering consumer communications. The vocabulary of hairceuticals is becoming mainstream.
